On Apostasy Discussion on Matthew 24:10-11

ANSWERING CATHOLIC DEFENDERS ON THEIR QUESTIONS ON “APOSTASY” 

part 1

Let us answer one by one a post by a certain Darwin Canas.

(1) DARWIN CANAS SAID THAT MATTHEW 24:10-11 CANNOT BE A PROOF THAT THE CHURCH WAS APOSTATIZED:

“10At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.
“This verse cannot be a proof that the Church was apostatized for it says "many will turn away" if you go back to your logic class, the term "many" refers to a particular, not universal which means the verse refers only a number of people will turn away from faith, not all…”

OUR ANSWER:

Mr. Canas said that Matthew 24:0-11 cannot be a proof that the Church was apostatized for it says “many will turn away.” He further explain that “the term ‘many” refer to a particular, not universal which means the verse refers only to a number of people will turn away from faith, not.”

Yes it is true that the word “many” refers only to a paricular number of people, not all. It is also true that what the Lord said was “MANY will turn away from the faith” – this not all. HOWEVER, THE WHOLE TRUTH IS THE LORD ALSO EXPLAINED WHY HE IS ONLY “MANY WILL TURN AWAY AWAY FROM THE FAITH.” Mr. Canas quoted only Matthew 24:10-11. I don’t know if he intended or only due to ignorance that he omitted verse 9. But whatever is his reason, the fact is he indeed omitted verse 9. Now, for the sake of the truth let us quote Mathew 24:9-11:

Matthew 24:9-11 NIV

“9Then YOU WILL BE HANDED OVER TO BE PERSECUTED AND PUT TO DEATH, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.  10AT THAT TIME MANY WILL TURN AWAY FROM THE FAITH and will betray and hate each other,  11and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.” (Emphasis mine)

 SO INDEED, “NOT ALL” BUT ONLY “MANY” WILL TURN AWAY FROM THE FAITH BECAUSE THOSE REMAINED FAITHFUL WERE PERSECUTED AND PUT TO DEATH.
